The most powerful man in the world, US President Donald Trump is a man under siege.
According to the latest media reports, more than half of the US House of Representatives now support the impeachment of the US president, following allegations that he "pressured" the Ukrainian president to open investigations on Joe Biden, his likely political opponent in the 2020 presidential race.
However, how does the impeachment of a president work in the US?
1. Any member of the House of Representatives can introduce a motion to impeach the president if they feel the president has committed treason, bribery and/or other high crimes including abuse of office.
2. These allegations are then subjected to an enquiry/investigation by the concerned House committee(s)
3. If the claims are substantiated the Speaker of the House will then order the matter be put to a vote. If a simple majority (51%) support impeachment, then the matter moves to trial at the Senate level.
4. The chief justice of the Supreme Court presides over the trial, with senate acting as the jury.
5. At the end of the trial, the Senate votes and determines the final verdict. If at least two-thirds (67%) of the Senators vote for the motion, then the President is impeached and the Vice-president takes over for the remainder of the term.
