Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has ruled out the possibility of having a referendum soon.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga have promised changes which will see the country going for a referendum.
Through the Building Bridges Initiative report, the country could be subjected to the plebiscite before 2022 polls as had earlier been hinted.
But according to Murkomen, the timeline including lack of referendum law cannot make it possible for the country to hold polls.
“If you ask me, a referendum is not possible this year and we do not need it to solve our issues. The earliest we can have it is October, November or December this year. I believe there will be no referendum this year because the same politicians talked about it in the past year but nothing happened,” Mr Murkomen said.
Siaya Senator James Orengo has been on the front line calling for the referendum before the end of the year.
Mr Orengo believes that the Building Bridges Initiative team should conclude the report before July 2020.
“We want to see matters that are policy and statutory in nature. The committee needs to start working as early as possible,” Mr Orengo said, noting that the absence of the referendum law will not hamper the plebiscite.
