Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has lauded Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai for taking swift action against officers caught on camera assaulting a JKUAT student.

On Monday, a video emerged online showing four officers attacking a student, as he tried to shield himself from them. The video elicited massive reaction prompting the IG to react.

In a statement, the police boss said he had directed the Internal Affairs Unit to commence investigations and make recommendations for action within hours.

Later in the day, he sent out a another statement indicating that the officers in the video had been identified, and interdicted.

"The National Police Service wishes to inform that the four police officers who were caught on camera meting excessive force on a JKUAT student have been identified and consequently interdicted from service as per police procedure," the IG's statement read in part.

Reacting to the announcement, Sonko lauded the police boss for reacting swiftly to the matter.

“I wish to take this opportunity to commend the Inspector General of police Hillary Mutyambai, for his swift action in concluding the disciplinary process and interdicting the four rogue police officers, who were caught on camera assaulting a JKUAT student in under 24 hours.

"This is the way to go and Kenya we want. However, since our police force has generally undergone positive reforms, I am appealing to the members of the public, to be cooperative and respectful to all our disciplined law enforcement officers when they discharge their duties of maintaining law and order” he said.
