Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga has revealed that she is a cancer survivor.
Speaking before the National Assembly Health Committee on Tuesday, the lawmaker revealed that she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer five years ago.
The vocal MP said that the diagnosis was made in a foreign hospital after local doctors failed to identify the problem. She noted that the cancer was at an advanced stage but she was able to receive treatment.
“I went abroad to seek treatment because it was at an advanced stage. But I just think it’s God who has seen me through this," she said.
Wanga has since kicked off a campaign to pass the Cancer Prevention and Control (Amendment) Bill 2015 which seeks to have cancer as a component under primary health care.
“My motivation to come up with the bill is because I was diagnosed with cancer but I was able to get treatment abroad,” she added.
This comes a day after the death of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore who succumbed to Leukemia, a blood cancer, on Monday.
Collymore was cremated during a private ceremony held at Kariokor on Tuesday.
