Kenyans join the rest of the world in marking the World Aids Day on Sunday with a reminder that the virus is manageable.
In an interview in Kisumu on Saturday, Yvonne Awuor who works with the Women Fighting Aids in Kenya Organization said the virus can be managed if one gets tested and starts medication in good time.
“HIV is manageable. Let people know their HIV status. If you are tested positive, don’t fear, there’s a life after your status. Get treatment and also adhere to the treatment,” she said.
Awuor pointed out that their major concern is the number of young people being infected with the virus and urged various stakeholders to step up awareness campaigns for a free HIV/AIDS society.
“As a Nation, our main challenge currently is about the high number of young people when it comes to new infections of HIV that is between the ages of 15-24. It is a collective responsibility; parents, guardians and also caregivers let us take up the mantle. Let us not shun away from talking about sex and other health-related indicators,” she noted.
World Aids Day is being marked across the country, and all over the world under the theme 'Communities United towards HIV free generation'.
The day has been marked since 1988 with an aim of raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic.
