Several schools across the country have been shut down by the Ministry of Education following a tragedy at a Nairobi school that claimed several lives, and left several pupils injured.
Following the tragedy, the Ministry of Education vowed to conduct an operation and close down schools that do not meet the set standards.
In the coastal region, 10 school owners have been arrested and 147 private primary and secondary schools shut down.
Coast Regional Education Coordinator Hassan Duale said all closed down schools are crime scenes.
He promised to ensure all schools that do not meet the set standard are shut down, adding that such schools pose a risk to the lives of students attending them.
“No one should access the places until investigations are over. This operation will continue until we close down all unregistered learning institutions whose structures pose health and safety risks to our learners,” he said as quoted by Business Daily.
He singled out Journey of Hope Academy as of the most affected schools.
“When we engaged with the management of the institution, the proprietor took off, none of the teachers is trained, the pupils also lack textbooks,” Duale said.
He assured all affected candidates sitting for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education that they will have a place to learn and sit for the national exams.
