Students at Multimedia University on Saturday raised complaints about the invasion of stray baboons at the institution.
In a video that is circulating on social media, the students are seen being chased around the school by the baboons. The running battles with the wild animals have apparently lasted for a better part of the week.
According to Mitchelle Imani who is a student at the institution, the baboons have caused chaos as they sometimes break into the hostels and even steal from the students.
“These baboons disturb us a lot. First of all, they don't like girls, they even take away our food. They break in through the doors and windows into the hostel before licking and stealing the sugar. (Hizi baboons hutusumbua sana. Kwanza hazipendi madem, huwa zinatunyang’anya chakula. Mainly huwa zinafungua milango na kubomoa madirisha za hostel, zinaingia kwa hostel na kulamba na kuiba sukari. Ata huwa zinakuja class),” she told Citizen TV.
Interestingly enough, the baboons appear when the students are on a session and disappear during the holidays.
The African Wildlife Foundation claims that the baboons, which operate in an average group of 50, are losing their homes due to increased agricultural activities and settlement of people.
“Baboons are often intentionally poisoned and killed because they tend to be considered as a pest species,” the foundation stated.
