Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa has ridiculed members of the Kenya Navy rehearsing for Mashujaa Day slated for October 20.
Speaking on Friday in Murang'a during an Inua Mama event, the outspoken legislator appeared to take issue with the rehearsals which are taking place just metres away from the Likoni channel where a lady and her daughter died after their car plunged into the Indian Ocean.
She called on strong action to be taken on the members of the top brass of the Kenya Ferry Services and the Kenya Navy.
"As we speak now, those two people are underwater, 60ft under. And I am seeing the Kenya Navy preparing for the Mashujaa Day celebrations (Tunapozungumza hao watu wawili wako chunk ya maji fiti sitini. Na mimi naona Kenya Navy, jeshi la Kenya Navy linaandaa sherehe tarehe ishirini ndani ya Mombasa Mama Ngina Drive), " she said.
Her strong words came hardly 48 hours after she petitioned President Uhuru Kenyatta to cancel the Mashujaa Day celebrations, saying that there was nothing to celebrate.
Mariam Kighendi and her daughter Amanda Mutheu drowned on Sunday evening in a freak incident that has left Kenyans reeling in shock wondering how safe they are while making use of the ferry services.
Efforts to retrieve the bodies of the two victims are underway and are being spearheaded by a multiagency team drawn from departments of the national government and private divers hired by the county government of Mombasa.
The government has come under blistering criticism over what a section of Kenyans sees as the sluggish pace of the recovery efforts.
