The date for the next British general election has been set at December 12, 2019.
Members of Parliament voted for the new date after a protracted back and forth between the British executive and the legislature over the prospect of an early general election.
The development will come as huge relief for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson who has been pushing for an early election.
Legislation for the early election will now proceed to the House of Lords where it is expected to face insignificant resistance.
Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn told members of his shadow cabinet that he was more than ready to fight out with the governing Conservative Party in the early election.
The Liberal Democrats also welcomed the idea saying they were ready for an election.
Jo Swindon, the Liberal Democrats leader, said that the party would be fighting the election on a platform of stopping the departure of Britain from the European Union.
"The Liberal Democrats are the strongest party of Remain and will be standing on a manifesto to stop Brexit by revoking Article 50. This country deserves better than Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn, and I am excited to take our positive, pro-European, liberal vision to the country as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Prime Minister, " Jo Swindon said.
Johnson had accused Parliamentarians of engaging in obstructionism.
