Two Kenyan rugby players convicted of rape have been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The two players namely; Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba were handed the sentence after being found guilty of gang raping an upcoming female musician last year.
Wanyama and Olaba had pleaded with the court listening to their case to hand them non-custodial sentences but that has been turned down.
Through their lawyer Jimmy Simiyu, the players noted that they were young, had a bright future ahead, and requested for a lighter sentence.
“It’s been a very depressing period for them, they have been discontinued at their respective universities and have not participated in a single match in their team. They are just starting life… they come from humble backgrounds and they have been able to help their families… the first accused has seven siblings while the second accused has four siblings. We pray that you take that into account," Simiyu said.
Martha Mutuku, the chief magistrate who presided over the case, found the two guilty for the offence that transpired in February, 2018.
The two have a right to appeal the ruling.
