The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has hit out at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) following the move to cut ties with the union.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Knut accused TSC of killing the teaching profession in the country.
''Who is killing the teaching profession in Kenya? They sack teachers. Kill the teacher's voice @KNUTKenya. Then hire teachers on contract paying them $6 a month,'' said Knut.
The union further accused TSC of dictatorship and muzzling the voice of teachers.
"The employer @TSC_KE through mischief and dictatorship has ensured that all primary school teachers in Kenya have no voice and cannot take part in the Collective Bargaining Agreement without @KNUTKenya. @KuppetKenya reps high school teachers," added Knut.
This comes a day after TSC CEO Nancy Macharia terminated the commission's recognition agreement with Knut.
TSC noted that the agreement was terminated on grounds that Knut's membership numbers are below the required simple majority.
“Pursuant to the provisions of clause 2 of the Recognition Agreement existing between the Teachers Service Commission and the Kenya National Union of Teachers and section 4 (1) of the Labour Relations Act, 2007, the commission hereby issues a two months notice to KNUT to terminate and/revoke the Recognition Agreement dated 15th May 1968 on the following grounds: The Kenya National Union of Teachers does not have the simple majority of unionisable employees under the employment of the Teachers Service Commission as at November 4, 2019,” read TSC's letter.
Last week, TSC gazetted the deregistration of Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion as a teacher.
The war between TSC and Knut started after Sossion joined politics in 2017. He was nominated into the National Assembly by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
TSC pushed for his resignation from Knut in vain.
Sossion has vowed to remain put noting that his deregistration doesn't affect his position at Knut.
