Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has been criticised for banning overnight mourning events commonly known as 'disco matanga'.
The CS has been summoned by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Administration after Rabai MP William Kamoti protested the ban.
According to the MP, the ban imposed on 'disco matanga' goes against his community's cultural beliefs.
The lawmaker now wants the no-nonsense CS to lift the ban imposed on the overnight events in Kilifi County.
“What measures has the ministry put in place to ensure security is provided during cultural celebrations to enable communities to give their departed kin a deserving send-off in line with their cultural and traditional practices?” asked Mr Kamoti, as quoted by the Daily Nation.
“Every community has a way of celebrating their dead. In Kilifi and particularly Rabai, dead people are celebrated in overnight events," he added.
While issuing the directive on the ban in January, Matiang'i noted that the overnight events were being used by criminals to commit crime in the area.
“This thing called 'disco matanga' is no longer a cultural event. Criminals are taking advantage to commit crimes,” said Matiang'i.
However, MPs expressed different views when the issue was debated on in Parliament.
Some lawmakers accused the CS of suppressing some cultures while others supported the ban, arguing that the events have a negative impact on society.
“It is important we respect the culture of others and most importantly respect our own cultures. What actually stands as a rightful way to give befitting send-off has now been turned to something else,” said Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir.
