Troubled Starehe MP Charles Njagua Kanyi alias Jaguar was arraigned in court on Thursday and charged with an offence of making xenophobic remarks.
Appearing before Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Sinkiyan Tobiko, the MP pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Senor prosecution counsel Duncan Ondimu filed an application seeking the court to detain the legislator for 14 days.
Ondimu told the court that there is a likelihood that the case will be interfered with if the MP is granted bail.
“It is important for the court to be aware that he (Jaguar) is a convict. He was sentenced on February 21, 2019, on two accounts of causing death by dangerous driving. If released on bail, he might commit further crimes, Ondimu told the court.
According to the prosecution, the court fined the MP Sh20, 000 or six months imprisonment and also barred him from driving for one year.
The MP was on March 21, 2017, charged with causing the death of Mugo Mwangi a motorcyclist and his passenger along the Sagana Makutano road in Kirinyaga County.
According to the charge sheet, he is alleged to have caused the deaths by dangerously driving his Range Rover Reg. No KCB 808J.
The Court will on Friday rule on the MP’s application to be released on bail.
