The assistant county commissioner of Mwala sub-county Charles Njura has warned against sand harvesting along River Athi banks in Machakos county.
Njura has stated that in this area the activity of sand harvesting has been very high causing drying seasonal rivers and roads spoiling due to illegal deep digging in search of the commodity.
Speaking in Kathama market while addressing the residents and traders, the administrator sent a stern warning and tough action to the notorious harvesters.
"The illegal activity has seen our roads impassable, an example of such a road is the one from Mutula market to Syondonga and Kimuuni which borders River Athi, the roads are impassable using vehicles and motorbikes due to manmade holes," said Njura.
The assistant county commissioner further stated that the government will not be reluctant to punish the people carrying out sand harvesting in Machakos county.
He further called upon the residents to work with the Nyumba Kumi initiative so as to report the law breakers and ensure they are brought to book to improve community security.
