The Judiciary in Eldoret is partnering with non-governmental organizations and the police to establish modern courts that will be handling children matters alone.
According to Eldoret High Court Judge Stephen Githinji, this will ensure children cases are handled in a conducive environment.
“The courts available do not have necessary facilities that would make them meet required standards and conditions in the available courts where children have to be served together with mature people don’t favour children,” said Githinji.
He said children cases are supposed to be handled separately.
Githinji spoke during a stakeholder meeting in Eldoret town on Thursday noting that children cases should be handled carefully with the privacy they deserve because they are delicate.
“Modern courts handling children matters alone will help the Judiciary reduce the backlog of cases and also help children get justice on time as per the law in a better manner,” added the Eldoret High Court Judge.
Center for Human Rights and Mediation Organization Director Nick Omito who also spoke noted that conditions which are making children not get justice as expected is police stations which don’t have cells for children.
He added children's remand in Eldoret is overwhelmed.
