Laban Ayiro has officially taken office as Moi University Vice Chancellor, amid controversy and protests by governors and MPs over the appointment.
Ayiro, who takes over from former VC Richard Mibey has faced stumbling blocks in the name of area leaders, who were demanding the appointment of ‘one of their own’.
Led by Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago and Elgeyo Marakwet's Alex Tolgos, the politicians shocked many on Tuesday when they led protests at the university, demanding that Professor Isaac Kosgey be installed as VC
However, Ayiro took over in a ceremony at the Eldoret University on Wednesday, and will serve in acting capacity for three months.
"I accept this huge responsibility of acting VC. I need your support to carry out the responsibilities from where Mibey left," he said.
"I will do what I can until the new VC comes to office," said Ayiro, who had been serving as acting deputy vice-chancellor in charge of planning.
Leaders from other parts of the country and Kenyans at large have condemned the Rift Valley leaders against the appointment of Ayiro, saying it paints a bad picture on the institution.
