Kiambu county anti-drug campaigner Gladys Chania has challenged church leaders to partner in the fight against drug abuse that is rampant among the youth.

Speaking during the Kiambu Women Leadership Conference organised by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) at Jumuia Resort in Limuru on Tuesday, Chania said that drug abuse menace will be curtailed if religious leaders and other stakeholders step in.

The anti-drug crusader intimated that the church has a crucial role to play in the fight against drug abuse and other challenges facing young people.

Chania said that drug menace is a serious challenge that threatens the stability of the society if not addressed.

“Church leaders should partner with us in the fight against drug abuse for the sake of our young people who have been trapped in it,” she said.

The anti-drug campaigner said that several programmes aimed at rehabilitating drug addicts’ ad users are ongoing.

Chania said that the church can help through counselling and mentorship of the reformed addicts to make sure that they do not relapse.

The anti-drug crusader also asked the society to discriminate against reformed drug addicts but accommodate them to the society.

She said that reformed addicts need to be empowered to make sure that they don’t relapse. At the same time, Chania asked women to mentor their sons and daughters against drug abuse.

She said women are the people that spend much time with their children hence need for them to counsel and mentor the properly.
