Eight drivers were arrested over different traffic offences following a police crackdown in Machakos town, Tala and Kangundo in Machakos county.
Machakos traffic police officers on Wednesday night targeted night drivers and motorists who take advantage of the night to break rules and regulations set by the traffic department.
Among the arrested were motorists and matatu drivers who did not have licences, insuarances and correct attire like reflector jackets and helmets.
Speaking to Joseph Muasya a bodaboda operator who luckily passed the requirements, stated that the crackdown was unexpected but was necessary so as to reduce accidents in the area.
"The police officers put a road block in a corner near the Katoloni stage where almost all of us pass through and inspected if we had licenses, insuarances, helmets and reflector jackets. Most of us lacked either one or more and so were arrested," stated Muasya.
The police officers also arrested the motorists operating past the legal working hours set which is 11pm.
The motorists who were arrested for failing to have any of the requirements were charged a fine of between Sh5,000 and Sh10,000 or if not be taken to court.
This follows increased accident reports in Machakos county of which most are caused by either over speeding motorists or unprotected passengers.
The bodaboda operations have in the past been banned from operating past 11pm as thugs have been hiring the same for transport while commiting crimes.
