Speaking in the town on Wednesday, Mwangi called on the Thika sub-county Children Department and Social Development Office to take immediate step to address the problem.

Mwangi said that the kids, most of them who are below five years, are at a huge risk of contracting diseases as well as well as being exposed to hostile environmental conditions.

"It is very unfortunate that we have a children's department and that of social services yet we have children of mentally challenged mothers lining the streets for alms and sleeping in very hostile and unsafe environments," said Mwangi.

He said that the Children's Act provides that such children whose mothers can't be able to take care of them be taken care of by the state.

"Most of these children are products of rape that was meted on their mothers by shameless men. What will prevent the same men from sexually abusing these kids who are always with their vulnerable mothers. The children’s office must do something," he said.

Mwangi further called for such women to be taken to homes where they can be taken care of saying that cases of children coming from mentally ill women will go down.
