Orange Democratic Movement party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has weighed into the ongoing debate on possible successor of Ken Okoth for Kibra seat.

Speaker Justin Muturi earlier this week declared the seat vacant, after elapsing of 21 days following the death of Mr Okoth, who was serving his second term.

With the seat expected to be determined in selection of ODM candidate, Sifuna has been linked to the race, even though he maintains that he's not sure whether he will run or not.

Sources within Orange House have linked Mr Sifuna to the race, having shifted his political base from Western Kenya to Nairobi in 2017. He narrowly lost to Senator Johnson Sakaja.

“ODM has not received any application from any candidate to vie on its ticket. I cannot say whether I will run or not,” said Mr Sifuna.

Before shifting to Nairobi, Sifuna had lost in ODM nominations for Kanduyi parliamentary seat, which was eventually won by Ford Kenya's Wafula Wamunyinyi.

His father, Lawrence Sifuna, served as Kanduyi and Bumula MP in 80s. He was among the fierce seven bearded sisters who antagonised Daniel Moi.

Others interested in ODM ticket are former MCA Pius Otieno, ODM Youth Coordinator Benson Musungu and Eliud Owalo, who ditched ODM this week.

Rooting for a fair nomination process, Mr K’Otieno said such a process should be acceptable to all the candidates.

“I will vie but it will be wise to carry out a free, fair and credible nomination exercise. I am aware that the ODM constitution allows for different forms of picking a candidate, but it will be wise to conduct fair nominations,” said K’Otieno.

Mr Musungu said he does not wish to be given direct nomination, and called for a fair contest among the contenders.

“I have expressed my interest to vie for the seat but I do not wish to be given a direct ticket. We should go for a free, fair and credible nomination process,” said Musungu.
