One of the constituencies where Kenyans should expect a tight political contest during the August 8, polls is Garissa Township currently represented in Parliament by House Majority Leader Aden Duale.
Former Parliament Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim has declared his candidature for the seat and going by his political stature, Kenyans should expect a hot political contest in the constituency.
Duale is Jubilee's right-hand man in Garissa and besides riding on this advantage, he is also Deputy President William Rutos' key ally.
He is prominent and enjoys immense support across the constituency.
He is a businessman and therefore has the money required to aid campaigns in the arid constituency.
He has vehemently been defending the Jubilee administration and this noise has earned him a name.
Mr Maalim, on the other hand, is man who plays politics in a different league.
He is a close ally to ODM party leader Raila Odinga and between 2007 and 2013 when he served as Parliament Deputy Speaker, he exhibited exceptional leadership characteristics that endeared him to all.
He is a go-getter, good orator and understands the art of public speaking. This offers him an advantage.
Maalim has indicated he will vie against Duale on a Wiper ticket. The party enjoys massive support particularly among non-Somalis living in Garissa town.
No wonder this is why he recently accuse Mr Duale of hatching plans to evicts members of the Kamba community and other non--Somalis from the town.
But who will carry the day after August 8?
The race will be tight. The voters will decide. There will accusations and counter-accusations over vote manipulation.
But at the end the day, either Mr Maalim or Mr Duale will be MP for Garissa Township after the polls.
