The Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) or rather the plastic carpet in your house could bring you sickness if you are not taking precautionary measures.
A study report released by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) during the 8th annual KEMRI Scientific and Health Conference in Nairobi has revealed that families are susceptible to asthma, sinusitis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
Speaking during the event, KEMRI’s Dr. Olga Mashendi said that the plastic carpet harbors fungi which in turn leads to respiratory complications.
“Exposure to dampness or fungi is associated with the development of asthma and increased asthma morbidity,” Mashendi said as quoted by The Daily Nation.
Therefore, the researcher recommended that households air the plastic carpet at least once every week in order to kill the dampness and possible fungi.
“Monitor fungi in your homes. Apply interventions to reduce fungi exposure,” Dr. Mashendi added.
According to the report, the research was conducted in Busia where a total of 60 households were sampled and swabs from the surfaces were collected, humidity was also measured.
