Here are three records that have been broken so far:

Opening day matchThe opening match of the Russia World Cup 2018 saw the home team Russia taking on Saudi Arabia. Russia thrashed substandard Saudi Arabia 5 nil in their opener match of their Group A.

This will go down in the books of history as the second biggest win ever by a hosting nation in their opening match at the World Cup tournament, after Italy’s 7-1 win against the USA in 1934.

First VAR penaltyThe first ever VAR penalty in the World Cup history was seen last weekend, on Saturday during France versus Australia match in Kazan Stadium in Russia.

After confirming with the VAR footage, the match referee Andres Cunha from Uruguay awarded the penalty. Australia defender Josh Rishdon had brought down France and Atletico Madrid star Antoinne Griezman in the penalty area.

Iceland’s goalIceland’s goal against Argentina was their first goal in the World Cup history. This was a goal worth celebrating by both fans at home and at the stadium and also by their players themselves.

Iceland is the smallest nation by population to ever qualify for the World Cup. Their only goal scorer, Augburg's Alfred Finnbogason will go down in the books of history for scoring the first World Cup goal for his nation.
