Three theft suspects were severely beaten and later burnt to death by angry residents on Sunday night in Iveti location, Kathiani sub-county.
The robbers were trying to break into one of the resident's homestead when they were ambushed by residents who had suspected them and raised an alarm. The suspects tried to escape, but the residents overpowered them.
The angry residents attacked the robbers with stones and logs, seriously injuring the suspects.
Confirming the incident, Iveti location chief Charles Loki said the suspects were later burnt to death by the angry mob.
“The robbers came around 1am and one of the residents raised an alarm. They tried to escape, but the residents had surrounded them and beat them until they lost consciousness. The suspects were torched before the police arrived at the scene,” said Loki.
The chief also urged the residents not to take the law into their own hands in punishing suspects.
Police officers arrived early morning and took the bodies to Machakos Level 5 hospital mortuary.
