The Commission for University Education (CUE) and Education Ministry are mulling over shutting down three universities by not renewing their licences.

Although the three have submitted their applications to renew their letters of interim authority, an official has hinted at their possible closure.

“The institutions stand accused of academic malpractices,” said a source at the ministry as quoted by Nation.

Commission for University Education CEO David Some said that reports on the institutions have already been forwarded to Cabinet CS Fred Matiang’i.

“We did our audit and submitted the reports and it is upon the CS to decide. We have made our case,” Some said as reported by Nation.

Last week, CUE released an audit report which indicated that a number of universities were awarding degrees to students without meeting the standard procedures and qualifications.

According to the law, any university holding a letter of interim authority has to apply for its renewal after four years and this

This renewal can only be given by the Education minister following recommendation by CUE.

Universities already shut down by CUE include Inoorero, Obama, Kenco and Landmark Universities.
