With the world celebrating the International women’s day, Kenya has not been left behind.
Women in the country have been to the fore in fighting for the females’ rights. We take a look at some of the women that have shaped the local political scene in the recent past.
1. Charity Ngilu
Charity or Mama Rainbow as she is commonly referred to has been in the local political arena for long, and is known by many for her political unrelentlessness.
The current Kitui Governor was the first woman to vie for the presidency and has been a major figure in Ukambani politics.
She has been in government and worked as a minister in various governments, and enjoyed the support of her local Kamba community.
2. Martha Karua
The leader of Narc Kenya has been a member of parliament for many terms but lost out in the 2017 elections in the gubernatorial race against Ann Waiguru.
3. Ida Odinga
Ida was born in 1950. She is the wife of Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya. Even though she has not been in active politics, Ida has been the key figure behind Odinga, who was in the forefront in the fight for the second liberation.
She graduated from the University of Nairobi with Bachelors degree of Arts from the University of Nairobi. She worked as a teacher for more than twenty years after graduation.
