Voter registration assistants in Nyamira have devised a new method of reaching more potential voters in the ongoing registration exercise in the county.
The IEBC officers in all 20 wards from Nyamira have resorted to moving to funeral ceremonies, market centers, harambees to reach their targets.
Assistant Nyamira county coordinator Rosemary Obara on Wednesday said officials resorted to the strategy following a low turn out in week one of the exercise.
“We had experienced a low turn out in week one since very few people were willing to come to the registration centers. We now have to move to funerals, weddings, buying centers and markets so that we reach more people. Our strategy has certainly worked to our expectations,” she said.
Ms Obara said she’s confident the strategy will help the region hit its target of 300,000 new voters in a months’ time.
“This strategy seems to work and I want to challenge our registration assistant to adhere to it. We are set to reach our target because this week alone, all centers have recorded a recommendable number than what we saw last week. The 300,000 target will no longer be an issue,” she added.
She urged local leaders and provincial administration to work closely with the IEBC officials top reach the target.
“But it’s important to note that we cannot be able to do it alone. The local leadership and provincial administration should work with our officers so that they are well briefed on all functions in the region. This will ease information flow,” she said.
