Members of the Ogiek community have been ordered to surrender their weapons to the police following fights that took place on Thursday morning at Ngongongeri.

Speaking to the media in Njoro on Thursday, Njoro assistant County Commissioner Peter Kinyanjui gave those armed two days to follow the orders.

"We are calling upon all members of the Ogiek community living in Njoro and Molo areas to surrender their bows and poisoned arrows to the police as fast as possible as we continue looking for a solution to these wrangles. We are giving them two days to comply," Kinyanjui said.

Sources said the skirmishes were sparked by attacks staged by hired goons to drive land owners out of the controversial piece of land.

Molo assistant county commissioner Judith Cheruiyot said security has been beefed up.

"There are a good number of police officers who we have deployed in the area to maintain peace as we seek to engage the National Land Commission to find solution to the land conflict," Cheruiyot said.
