The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) has received over 300,000 bags of maize from farmers across the country since it opened its doors two months ago.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett, however, said the uptake of the cereals from farmers has been low due to the ongoing rains in most of the agricultural regions.
Speaking during the marking of World Food day at Mama Sara Boit farm in Turbo on Wednesday, Bett said NCPB depots across the country have so far received 370,000 bags of maize from farmers.
"Most of the maize has not come in due to the rains but once it reduces we expect much more deliveries from farmers," Bett said.
NCPB is buying a 90kg bag of maize from farmers at sh3,200 up from last year's Sh3,000.The government recently allocated sh6 billion to facilitate the purchase of cereals from farmers for the country's Strategic Grains Reserve.
