Elizabeth Wangui, the woman pictured wailing as the Kiambaa Church in Uasin Gishu burnt in the course of the 2007/2008 post election violence has died.
Wangui died at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret on Saturday, with relatives saying that she succumbed to blood pressure, depression and a deteriorating health.
Her nephew Philip Gakuha said that the incident at the Kenya Assemblies of God church happened shortly after she was raped by rioting youths and also lost her son in the fire.
The church housed over 40 people who were hiding in there to avoid being lynched, before they were burnt inside.
Gakuha added that the deceased, who died aged 83 also went mad after the incident, and her attempts to return to her half acre land were futile due to deteriorating health.
“My aunt had been raped by the youths and her son was burning inside a Church. Things would never be the same again for her. She started developing high blood pressure, depression and suddenly became mad, often losing memory," he told the Standard on Thursday.
He said that until her death, the deceased was never able to receive the Sh400,000 compensation given to Internally Displaced Persons, with all her attempts hitting the wall.
"She had been promised Sh400,000 as compensation for the losses. We went to Nairobi three times to seek for the compensation but no one was willing to listen to us,” he added.
The family is now seeking Sh240, 000 shillings to clear the hospital bill and lay her to rest at her Kiambaa farm.
