Reacting separately to the just released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results, the parents on Thursday lamented that teachers had become a frustrated lot, and as such, were not giving their best in terms of service delivery to students.

"Teachers in this country are very demoralised because whatever they are being paid is not commensurate to the services they offer. There is need to look into their plight and pay them more money because that way, they will teach and the results will always be good," said Simon Mwangi.

His sentiments were echoed by Samuel Kihagi, a retired teacher, who said the past and current governments have greatly mistreated teachers.

"It is no surprise that some teachers even go to the length of abetting examination cheating just to register their frustrations with the government. They deserve a better pay because they are doing a great job," he said.

About 525,802 students who sat the examinations last year got their results with the Kenya National Examinations Council cancelling another 5,011 due exam irregularities.

While releasing the results, Education CS Fred Matiangi said there was widespread cheating which accounted for about 70 per cent.
