Security has been heightened in and around Moi University main campus in Eldoret, as the institution prepares to host its graduation ceremony today, Thursday, and on Friday.
This comes after leaders led by Uasin Gishu County Governor Jackson Mandago and Elgeyo Marakwet's Alex Tolgos vowed to disrupt the ceremony, demanding the installation of Professor Isaac Kosgey as the Vice Chancellor.
However, the ministry of education under Fred Matiang’I insisted that the decision will stand, and the ceremony will go on as planned.
“In doing that work, there is law that we follow. There is statute. The management of universities, the appointment of vice chancellors is governed by the Universities Act 2012,” said Matiang’I on Wednesday.
“What I need someone to do is to pull out that Act and point out the mistake that I have made. That is all. As a country, we also have to grow up and deal with things differently because this is a straight forward matter covered by statute,” he added.
Laban Ayiro, who has been appointed the acting VC took office on Wednesday in a ceremony held at the institution, and promised to carry on with the good work one by his predecessor.
