A traffic police officer has been charged at Thika law courts for allegedly soliciting bribes from motorists along the Thika-Garissa highway.
The traffic officer was arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-graft agency, as his fellow officers scampered into a nearby thicket for fear of being arrested.
Constable Jackson Kiptanui appeared before the Thika Resident Magistrate Ms Teresiah Murungi, where he was charged with receiving bribes.
Kiptanui pleaded not guilty and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000.
His arrest by the anti-graft detectives came just days after motorists plying the Thika-Garissa road complained of rampant corruption and harassment by the area traffic police officers.
The motorists had claimed that the speed gun based at Thika traffic base had turned into a cash mint by the unscrupulous officers who use it to solicit for bribes.
However, the traffic base Commander Amos Ambasa discarded the allegations of corruption among the said officers, saying no such case had been documented.
Thika-Garissa highway has been featuring on he headlines for the wrong reasons, most of which revolve around theft and road carnage.
Barely a month ago, several muggers were gunned down as the robbed motorists at gun-point.
