Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has sneered at the move to cremate former Kibra Member of Parliament Ken Okoth.
Khalwale said Okoth should be buried according to traditions of Luo community instead of being cremated, a practice he described as alien and disturbing.
"Simple, Mheshimiwa's burial should accord with the rich Luo culture at his father's home complete with 'terro buro'. Cremation is alien, disturbing and distasteful. It dates from 17,000 years ago and cannot, therefore, be mistaken for modernism," the former Senator tweeted on Thursday.
According to Raila Odinga, the leader of Okoth's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, the deceased will be cremated at a private function over the weekend.
Before the cremation, there will be a funeral service and viewing of the body at Got Rateng Secondary School, Homa Bay County, on Saturday.
“After the funeral service and viewing of the body at Got Rateng Secondary School, Ken will be given to the family to do the rest, just as we did with Kenneth Matiba,” Raila said on Wednesday.
There are reports that the MP had verbally told his wife, Monica Okoth, he wished to be cremated after death, which is contrary to the Luo culture.
