Nyamira residents have been asked to shun mob justice and instead involve authorities when handling controversial issues involving other citizens.

This comes after two suspected robbers who are currently receiving treatment at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital were beaten by a mob Nyamira.

Addressing residents in Nyamira Town on Wednesday, Nyamira County Commissioner Josephine Onunga condemned the incident and urged residents to respect the rule of law.

“I am shocked that cases of mob justice are still a norm in our county. We must at all times respect the rule of law and work with authorities in solving such cases. Beating a human being with the intention to kill is illegal and that cannot be tolerated,” she said.

Onunga further warned residents against committing the crime saying the government will not hesitate to punish them according to the law.

“Those who think that can take the law into their own hands must be warned of that. As a government, we will not hesitate to take action by arresting them and arraigning them in court,” she said.

She said residents should only apprehend suspected criminals hand them over to the authorities for prosecution.

“That does not mean that you do not deal with the cases whenever the authorities are not around. You can still apprehend them and hand the suspects to the police for questioning and subsequent prosecution,” added Onunga.
