The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) in Kisii County has been accused of laxity.

The area residents are worried that there might be an outbreak of a disease.

This comes after the town experienced breakage of water tunnels and people disposing waster without the department taking the necessary measures.

Speaking on Wednesday at Mwembe in Kisii during the youth meeting, Kisii community clinical officer, Kepha King’oina said that residents are at a high risk because the outbreak of diseases is expected if the problem is not solved in the early stages.

“The state of the town and its environs is bad and it is likely to cause diseases, we should have measures in place on how we can end this before the outbreak of the disease,” King’oina said.

He clinical officer also stated that the Nema department is no longer as active as it used to be before devolution. He, therefore, challenged the officers to wake up and perform their duties so that they can help the situation.

“Nema used to be active before devolution but now they are sleeping on the job. We would like to urge them to work upon the problems so that they can curb the problems which are likely to cause damage to residents,” he said.

Kisii County director of Nema, Tom Togo denied the accusations and said that the department is doing well despite the challenges they are facing.

“The department is still working despite the challenges we are facing and we are still strengthening the department so that we can curb all problems in the country,’’ he said.
