Former National Assembly Speaker Francis Ole Kaparo now claims that opposition leader Raila Odinga secretly plotted his ouster' in 2008.
Kaparo was replaced by the then Emuhaya MP Kenneth Marende, who presided over a hugely divided house immediately after 2007 polls.
In an interview with the Standard, Kaparo insisted that Mr. Odinga organized a three-day retreat at his Karen home where MPs took a secret oath to kick out Kaparo.
Mr. Odinga had protested the victory of Mwai Kibaki, a move that sparked chaos across the country leading to the death of 1,300 people.
“They were on a three-day bonding trip to get me out. They voted like robots,” he said, throwing his hands in the air in mirth.
Former Chepalungu MP Isaac Ruto, later Bomet Governor, admits that ODM MPs held a meeting at Raila's home where they agreed to kick out Kaparo.
“We agreed that we were not going to vote for Kaparo. The environment was charged. There was no way we would have voted anyone outside the party,” he said as quoted by the Standard.
But Ababu Namwamba, a vocal ODM MP at the time, laughs off the claims that MPs took oath at Raila's house.
“I have never taken any oath with a human. The only oath I have is between myself and Jesus.”
However, during that time, Namwamba had refused to take oath in allegiance to the President, causing anxiety and chaos.
Kaparo would later be appointed as chairman National Cohesion and Integration Commission, a post he held until recently when he retired.
