The leaders who spoke on Friday said that Raila should retire from politics to pave way for young leaders who can transform the country.

Led by Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici, the leaders said that Raila should retire from the political arena to give Deputy President William Ruto room to ascend to power after President Uhuru Kenyatta completes his second and final term in power.

The leaders said that Raila has been in the field of politics for a very long time, adding that retiring will be a good idea.

“He has been in politics for long and should hang his boots,” Ngirici said, as quoted by Daily Nation.

The remarks of the lawmaker were echoed by Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara who accused the African Union Special Envoy of using the handshake between him and Uhuru to launch endless attacks against Ruto as he seeks to regain his lost glory.

She argued that she is aware of the former prime minister's plot in the upcoming elections.

“We know what he is doing to the DP. Ruto is our presidential candidate for 2022,” she said.

The handshake between Raila and Uhuru has continued to cause jitters in Ruto’s camp. The DP's allies feel that Raila could be an impediment towards Ruto's quest to ascend to power in 2022.
