The county government of Kiambu has been advised to embrace modern technologies in managing solid wastes to ensure a safe environment.

Environmentalist Jared Karigu has challenged the county to set aside sufficient funds to manage the environment.

Speaking at an environmental workshop in Makongeni town on Wednesday, Karigu said new technologies should be adopted to minimise the amount of waste from households, small cortege industries and other institutions and also recycle the waste materials.

The expert pointed out that weak enforcement of government by-laws was to blame for deteriorating environmental standards.

"There have been very few efforts conducted by the county to conserve the environment. Embracing new technologies like recycling solid wastes would go a long way, not only in provision of employment opportunities but also creation of clean environment," he said.

Karigu noted that the existing environmental conservation laws were not very effective, giving residents a chance to destroy nature by littering carelessly.

He said that lack of resources was hindering development in the environmental conservation sector and urged the county to intervene and fill the gap.

He advised that corporate management would help conserve the environment in the most affected areas.

Karigu advised the county leaders and local administration officers to be in the forefront to sensitise the locals on the need for environment conservation.

He further noted that tree planting was crucial in the times where forests have been destroyed, hindering rains to fall effectively.
