A top Jubilee gubernatorial hopeful in Nyamira has refuted claims that he had opted out of the race to deputise the incumbent Governor John Nyagarama.
Mr Charles Mochama was ridiculed in the Nyamira Politics WhatsApp group when he was pictured seated next to the Governor during his sister’s burial on Wednesday, a picture that was mistaken as a sign of support for the incumbent.
And on Thursday in an exclusive interview with this writer, Mochama insisted that he was still in the race for the top county job, and expressed his optimism of winning the seat in the 2017 elections.
“I have seen pictures circulating online and some people claiming that I will deputise Nyagarama. That is very unfortunate and I urge all my supporters to ignore the rumours being propagated by my opponents. I am still in the race and come 2017, I will be the county boss,” he said.
Mochama added: “Nyagarama come to console me on Wednesday and that was a good sign in politics. We only focused on consoling my family and no one engaged in politics. I want to reiterate that those who think I will bow out of the race are simply mistaken.”
He urged politicians to use proper means during campaigns and warned them against defaming others, a move he noted can have serious consequences.
“Let us campaign with harmony because in the end, Nyamira people will have their say. It’s wrong to defame other candidates,” he said.
