The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the newly formed Jubilee Party leaders are likely to clash over the weekend, as both parties claim rights to Jomo Kenyatta sports grounds in Kisumu.

Leaders from both sides claim to have received permission to use the venue for their Saturday rallies.

Speaking on Thursday, officials from the Jubilee Party claimed to have secured the venue first, adding that they would hold their rally as planned.

Jubilee Party Nyanza region chairman Odhiambo Liete said preparations were already in order, and they had already sought security ahead of the rally.

"I personally spoke to the grounds manager on Monday morning by phone, when I asked about the availability of the venue. He confirmed that nobody had booked the venue and that is when I asked him to reserve it for us," said Liete.

Liete also wrote a letter to the Jomo Kenyatta sports grounds management on Monday seeking permission to use the venue this coming Saturday.

"The Jubilee Party is planning to hold a political rally on September 24 at the Jomo Kenyatta grounds. We, therefore, ask for availability of the grounds for the party's function/rally," read part of the letter.

However, Kisumu Central ODM treasurer Edward Ogola has maintained that his party was the first to book the venue.

"Immediately we came from the ODM 10th anniversary events in Mombasa, we had a well laid out schedule of activities and this rally is just part of what we are implementing in our programme," said Ogola.

"We approached the grounds management on September 16 and were told the grounds were available and that is why we went ahead and booked the venue. Our activities on Saturday will include campaigns for ID and voter registration," added Ogola, as quoted by the Standard.

On his part, the grounds manager, Tom Jinya, said the grounds will be used by the ODM party as well as a group of religious leaders.

This comes barely a week after the two parties claimed rights to Masinde Muliro grounds in Mathare, Nairobi County.

The clash was however averted after Jubilee backed down and booked a different venue.
