Thirdway Alliance leader Dr Ekuru Aukot is once again at the centre of another fight after the County Assemblies Forum (CAF) launched a bid to have his referendum bid halted.
The forum wants county assemblies to temporarily halt deliberations on his Punguza Mizigo referendum push, to give room for public participations before handing verdicts.
The forum on Wednesday urged the assemblies to suspend debates on the bill until a way forward on how the public participation forums will be realized is identified.
In response, the former presidential hopeful has insisted that the bill must be debated and a verdict given within three months after its submission by the electoral agency.
“No one can amend a constitutional timeline unless by way of articles 256 and 257,” he said, stating that the MCAs cannot break the law by going past the time frame stipulated by the law.
With the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) having given him the go-ahead to present the bill to the 47 county assemblies on July 18, all of them must either pass or reject it by October 18.
Punguza Mizigo seeks to among other things, reduce elective seats by more than half through reducing the number of constituencies and abolishing Deputy Governor and Woman Representative seats.
