Elgeyo Marakwet County Senator and leader of the majority in the Senate Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday night claimed there was no need for a referendum to be conducted following the proposals in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Murkomen opposed the idea of a referendum citing that there is a provision in the constitution that enables changes to be made on the BBI report.
He, however, added that the National Assembly will have to cooperate with the senate.
"Looking at the constitution article 255-256, you do not need a referendum to achieve the proposals that are there if both of us mobilize ourselves in both the National Assembly and the Senate and take forward the proposals in a bipartisan manner so that then we can achieve the objectives," Murkomen said.
Murkomen pointed out a conflict in the BBI report regarding the post of the Prime Minister.
"You have a proposal of a Prime Minister, who is exactly the position that currently Duale is holding being converted to be called the Prime Minister. But the proposal says that person comes from the majority party, that would not be possible," Mukomen stated.
Earlier on the Member of Parliament for Garissa Township and leader of Majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale had also dismissed the need for a referendum.
