The Procurement department at the County Assembly is being investigated after a joint report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Public Investment Committee (PAC) indicated corrupt dealings in the sourcing of the hansard system.
The joint committee tabled a report on Wednesday in the floor of the Assembly detailing how officers in the procurement department faulted procurement laws in awarding Sh7.8 million to Avtech Systems Limited which did not supply the equipment as specified.
The investigation was initiated last year after Nyalenda B MCA James Were demanded for an answer over faulty hansard equipment.
The joint PAC and PIC then took up the matter and did the report which has pointed fingers at the procurement office for defrauding the Assembly by illegally paying the contractor who had not completed the work.
The report read by joint committee Chairman Simba Opepo has recommended that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to come in and investigate the officers and the supplying firm directors and take legal action against them.
“These systems do not reflect the cost quoted here and we are ashamed as the Assembly. What we want is for the report to be finalized so that those who defrauded the assembly can return the money,” said nominated MCA Farida Salim.
Another Sh3.5 million meant for the purchase of furniture in the 35 ward offices could not be accounted for by the procurement department according to the report.
Presiding Speaker Samwel Ombogo however referred the report to the committee to adjust it by getting the response of those linked to the scam before tabling it for proper debate.
