Nominated Member of County Assembly Esther Mengere is now proposing counselling for women who procure abortions.

Mengere said the mother of the child is often affected and traumatised yet no one pays attention to her feelings.

She added that condemning women who engage in such a procedure has often ended up in many of them sinking into depression.

“Abortion is wrong and I condemn it. However, the woman involved also condemns herself and in some cases regrets what she did. There have been increased cases of suicide from such women which can be prevented if they get proper counselling,” she added.

Mengere addressing journalists on Wednesday where she called on the Ministry of Health to partner with her in the initiative.

“There is life after abortion and women need to know this. We need someone to constantly talk to them and encourage them. They should also be advised on what to do and seek medical help,” she added.

Mengere pointed out that the increased cases of women dumping their infants in the area was also worrying.

“Sometimes it affects them to a point that they do not wish to get another child,” she added.

She termed the Tuesday incident where an infant was found dumped in Bahati area as unfortunate.

“We will seek ways to help the mother and understand what her problem was,” she added.

The baby's mother has since been arrested and is being held at the Bahati police post.
