This is according to senior doctor Robert Kilonzo in Kangundo hospital who said that the most affected hospitals are Kangundo, Kathiani level 4 hospitals and Machakos level 5 hospital.

"Sometimes we get patients who need blood transfusion and at that time the hospital has no blood in store at all hence we transfer the patient to Machakos level 5 hospital who too most times encounter this shortage," he said.

He added that patients end up in private hospitals whose charges are quite high which has become a major problem in fulfilling the hospital's objective of providing health care to the people.

The hospitals, therefore, called upon the health department in Machakos county government to intervene because such shortages can end up causing serious health problems to patients who need blood transfusions and even death in extreme cases.
