Fortunate residents of Mavoko sub-county have been called upon to support orphans and vulnerable children in the region through school fee sponsorship.

Addressing the press at Bondeni Children Rescue Centre on Wednesday, the home's director Florence Gitau said that was the sure way for the "haves" to give back to the community.

"It is not easy to support a child who is not yours, many people prefer to take their children to expensive private schools, while their neighbours' drop for lack of school fees," said Gitau.

Gitau said it was better for the children to be assisted with education support instead of material things arguing education unlocks success of the children's future given that it is a bridge to graduating from abject poverty.

According to Gitau, there are increasingly high numbers of vulnerable children in the sub-county whose caretakers some of who are alive, cannot afford secondary school education fee.

She said a majority of children from such families hail from various many slums including Kasuitu, Kwa Mangeli, Sofia, City Carton and Juakali all within and in outskirts of Athi River town.

Gitau advised parents and caretakers of children from humble backgrounds who sat for the last year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Examinations to do all they can including applying for bursaries from various governmental departments  to ensure their children join secondary schools come early 2016.
