Machakos residents and business operators on Wednesday protested over frequent power outages in the area.

Speaking to local journalists, the business operators, led by the chair of Machakos Chamber of Commerce Mr Simeon Katheka, said that the frequent power cuts had interfered with their business operations, resulting in losses.

Katheka said the most affected were those whose businesses are highly dependent on electronics like refrigerators, saloon and barber shops equipment, photocopiers and printers, among others.

The operators said they are sometimes forced to close their businesses for an entire day, thus incurring huge losses.

Mary Mueni, a cyber café owner in Machakos Town, said her computers blew up due to the frequent power interferences, making her incur a loss of Sh100,000.

Kitheka expressed his dissatisfaction adding that if the situation was not looked into soon, they would hold demonstrations to protest over poor services by the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

"It is our right to get a reliable power supply and we are no longer going to sit down and watch as we continue to incur losses. We pay our bills and we demand good services from KPLC," said Kitheka.
