Forestry Society of Kenya Uasin Gishu County branch chairman Solomon Mibei has warned people cutting trees from forests of arrests.

Speaking in his office on Wednesday, Mibei said that most forests, not only in Uasin Gishu County but in the entire country have been invaded by loggers cutting trees without permission from the relevant authorities.

“Through deforestation, our country loses over seven billion shillings, not forgetting the impact it has on our environment and water catchment areas,” he said.

He said that he has received reports that some people have invaded Kaptagat Forest and are cutting trees to make timber and buy charcoal.

“We will not allow some people to draw us back by cutting trees and yet we are planting trees to achieve the 10% forest cover. Such individuals will be arrested and prosecuted. If you want to cut a tree, seek permission from the forest officials," he said.

He said cutting down of trees in forests has led to drying up of river sources, unpredictable weather conditions and also mudslides.

He also urged Uasin Gishu County residents to plant indigenous trees since they are least targeted by loggers, help in conservation of the environment and also used for aesthetic value.
