Despite their rivalry, ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto seems to have found a common position on the much anticipated Building Bridges Initiative report.
The BBI team which was assembled by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, is expected to handover the draft that could recommend for constitutional amendments.
Already, there are reports that the team has recommended a Parliamentary system of government, which would lead to introduction of powerful Prime Minister post.
On Friday, Deputy President William Ruto, who is perceived as a critic of the BBI team, insisted that the final draft must be subjected to public scrutiny.
This, he said, will allow people to make necessary recommendations that will better the draft. He warned against forcefully imposing the document on people.
“As a democratic society the proposals by BBI will be subjected to an open national conversation where every voice (the weak/strong, the small/big) will be heard,” Ruto tweeted on Friday.
And in an interview on Saturday, Mr Odinga said that it's Kenyans who will make final decision through consensus.
Odinga said the people will interrogate the document, make final recommendations which will be subjected to a national referendum.
“We want you to have faith in the ongoing reforms process. Once the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report is out Kenyans will have to decide on the emerging contentious issues,” he said.
“The health of our democracy is at a critical inflection point. Kenyans are demanding far-reaching solutions to return power to the people through a referendum.”
